The act of fasting

Asalam Alaykum readers, today I will be writing about fasting "O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous" Quran, Chapter 2:183. Fasting during the month of Ramadan is compulsory except you are suffering from an illness whether temporary or long term (such as diabetics), travelling for long, elderly (however, the elderly person can feed one person through out the fasting period if he/she is capable of doing so), menstruating, breastfeeding, pregnant.

Fasting  is the act of refraining from food, drinks, sexual relations and evil deeds from dawn to sunset. It takes the 4th position when it comes to the 5 pillars of Islam. Some individuals that are exempted during fasting must pay it back after by fasting for the number of days that they were exempted for. These individuals include the temporary sick, the traveler, the pregnant woman, the nursing woman and the menstruating woman.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The month has 29 or 30 days. It depends on the sighting of the crescent moon. The Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) during the month of Ramadan. The Night  of Decree is the holiest Night of the year, it is Night the first revelation of the Holy Quran was sent down  " Indeed, We sent the Quran down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn." Quran Chapter 97: 1-5

Laylat al-Qadr also known as the Night of Decree which is one of the last ten days of Ramadan. It is believed to be an odd numbered date which are 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th. You are meant to worship Allah (SWT) on the night of those days.

It is good to fast 3 times every month. It is not compulsory. It helps to strengthen you spiritually. You should make sure you wake up to eat before dawn every time you fast

The difference between corporate strategy and business strategy

Hello readers,  I hope your week has been fine so far. Today I will be writing about the difference between corporate strategy and business strategy. But first of all, what is strategy? It can defined as a plan designed to help achieve a particular goal(s).

Corporate strategy is concerned about your business as a whole while business strategy focuses on a unit within your business. In other words, a corporate strategy is formulated for the whole business while a business strategy is formulated for a single unit within your business.

Corporate strategy directs a business and helps your business to achieve its long term goals. It is created to fulfill the vision of the organisation. The top management is responsible for the development of the corporate strategy. It guides the decision making process within the organisation. It is concerned about the industry in which the business operates in.

Business strategy on the other hand helps the departments within your business meets their goals as different business strategies are developed for different departments. A business strategy is designed specifically for a department. It looks at ways the business can compete with each unit of the business. It focuses on specific issues such as developing a new product.

Corporate strategy will say "what business can we compete in? Business strategies will say how should we compete? Corporate strategy is concerned about the way a business can add value to itself as a whole which includes its subsidiaries if it has any while a business strategy is concerned about how a particular unit can add value to the business.

That is all for today. Thank you for reading this article. Keep checking out my blog regularly, cheers!

The importance of planning in business

Hello readers, today I am going to be telling you about the benefits of planning. It is important to plan before embarking on any project as it will help you formulate strategies you will use to achieve your business goals. Planning in this context can be defined as a situation that predetermines actions to be taken in order to achieve business goals. Without a plan, you might not achieve your business goals. As such planning is essential to the success of your business. Thus, managers and business owners should always make plans.

Planning in business helps you to know what actions you need to take in order to improve your business. It also helps management allocate resources appropriately, as a plan will let you know what projects are likely to succeed. It will also let you know the ones that are likely not to succeed. Thus, it encourages management to spend adequate funds on the projects that are likely to succeed. It contributes to the management of finance within an organisation.

It also helps management communicate with subordinates, as the plan made by the management lets subordinates know the actions they will be taking to contribute to the overall success of the business. Thus, employees can feel good about their own contributions, so in all a plan can serve as a motivational tool. It also reduces conflicts within a team as each team member knows what tasks they are suppose to execute in order to contribute to the overall success of the team. When tasks have been allocated to each team member by management, no conflict will arise over tasks being carried out.

It also helps a business to see opportunities which it can embark on. When opportunities are spotted, taking advantage of it helps the business to grow. Strategies for this opportunity can be developed as a result of the plan. Then it will also encourage the business formulate ways to implement the strategies as well as direct the business activities, so that the opportunities will contribute to overall success of the business.

Planning provides a medium through which a business can see if it is performing well as the target defined in plans serve as a yardstick to compare result with. A company will do better eventually if they can compare there result with the planned result. A favourable variance (actual result exceeds planned result) will show that a company is doing well and they will motivated to keep it up, however, when planned result exceeds the actual result it will motivate the business to do better.

That is all for today, thank you for reading this article. Keep checking out my blog regularly, cheers!

Paying your Zakat

Asalam Alaykum readers, today I will be writing about Zakat. This is one of the 5 Pillars of Islam (the Pillars are obligatory). All the 5 Pillars of Islam are important, however, Zakat takes the 3rd position when it comes to importance, following Prayers which takes the 2nd position and Declaration of Faith which takes the 1st position. "And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion." Quran, Chapter 98: 5

Zakat is a compulsory alms giving. "Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler -an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise." Quran, Chapter 9: 60. This verse tells you who zakat  should be given to.

Zakat in literally terms means making pure, in other words, Zakat purifies your wealth for you. It does not purify ill-gotten wealth. It purifies wealth gotten from good sources. Zakat is calculated as 2.5% of your wealth after deducting your living expenses e.t.c. For your wealth to qualify for zakat (for you to pay zakat) your wealth must be above a minimum amount which is known as nisab. Nisab can be either measured by gold or silver. If you are using gold to measure nisab, your wealth must be above the market value of 3 ounces of gold (87.48 grammes). The cash equivalent of the value of 3 ounces of gold is the nisab if you are using gold. However if you want to use silver to calculate the nisab, the nisab will be the market value of 21 ounces of silver (612.36 grammes).

Zakat is due for payment one lunar year after the date your wealth equals or exceeds the nisab. Zakat is payable on cash, gold, livestock, silver and others, a zakat calculator which is available online will guide you when you want to calculate your zakat. The nisab used for livestock is different.

Benefits of carrying out a market research

According to investopedia.com, "a market research is a process of assessing the viability of a new good or service through research conducted directly with the consumer which allows a company to discover the target market and record opinions and other input from consumers regarding interest in the product."

A market research helps you to know who your customers are. It also let you know what you need to do to gain a competitive advantage over competitors. It tells you who your competitors are and what their weaknesses are.

A market research needs to be done before starting your business. A market research will also let you know what new products you can introduce to the market. You will also be informed about how these potential new products will perform in the market in terms of profits. It can also be done to know if you can change your existing products.

A market research can be done using primary ways (primary research) or secondary ways (secondary research). Primary ways will involve you dealing with the customers directly. A primary research can be carried out via an interview, the use of questionnaires or through the use of a focus group. A secondary research will includes the use of data gotten from databases. Data used when carrying out a secondary research have been previously collected from consumers and then organised, all you will be doing is to analyse the data so that you can be informed about your potential product. You may read this article.

Your business is more likely to get lost if a market research is not done before starting your business. Always remember to ask Allah for guidance (Istikharah Prayer) first. However, it is never too late to carry out a market research so that you can introduce better new products. Without a market research, competitors will have an edge over your business.

That is all for today, thanks for reading this article and keep checking out my blog regularly. Cheers!

Benefits: economies of scale

Economies of scale is the cost advantage achieved when an increase in production leads to a fall in the unit costs of production, as fixed costs are spread over a larger amount of products. Thus, a larger company will have a lower unit cost when compared to smaller companies. This is because larger companies have the capability to make more products

An example of economies of scale; if a company will pay $500 to keep 2000 bottled water in a storage facility, however this same storage facility has the capability to store 4000 bottled water. This same company now decides to increase the amount of bottled water it produces to 4000 units and keeps them in the same storage facility. Economies of scale is said to arise when the unit costs of storing drops from $0.25 ($500/2000) to $0.125($500/4000). The company ends up saving $0.125($0.25-$0.125) on each product as result of increasing its production.

Economies of scale could be internal or external. Companies can enjoy it externally when there is a development in their industry or economy which gives them an opportunity to produce more which in turn leads to a fall in the unit costs of the product. Internal economies of scale on the other hand as to do with your company itself, development within your company can help you achieve economies of scale internally.

Internal economies of scale can be achieved technically, a situation whereby a company invest in larger machineries which can then be used to produce more goods which will in turn reduce the unit costs of production. Buying in bulk is another way internal economies of scale can be achieved, as purchasing discounts can be obtained when goods are bought in bulk (a supermarket can use this medium to achieve economies of scale), buying goods in bulk will reduce its unit cost.

In all, if you have the ability to increase your level of production then do it as it will help you reduce your costs. Cost reduction can help you compete better in the business market as you will able to drop prices, thus your goods will cost lower. It can also help you increase your profit, as dropping prices will help you gain more market share which will in turn increase your profit.

The importance of your brand name

Hello readers, today I will be telling you about the importance of your brand name. You must have been to a store to pick up an item and you saw different brands on the aisle, I am sure you ended picking up the most popular brand. Individuals pick the popular brands most of the time except in situations when you may decide to pick a particular brand because it is cheaper and it provides value for money.

A good brand name gives your customer assurance. They feel assured that they are buying a product of good quality. It also makes customers know that a company is responsible for the brand, making them feel secure about the product; some of these brands come with warranty. A good brand name helps you promote your products, the product sells itself. Ths brand name serves as a marketing tool.

A good brand name can also help your customers refer family and friends through the word of mouth to buy your product. It also helps customers to remember your product when they have a need or want your product can meet. You will rather buy an item from Amazon.com or Konga.com as opposed to just any website you see online. As such a good brand name will reduce the risks associated with buying items online.

From above, you can tell that a good brand name will help you increase your market share. A new product from a reputable brand will do well in the market, as the brand is already trusted. You should create a good reputation for your brand by always delivering good quality products. A bad reputation will prevent customers from buying your brand, so work on making your brand reputable.

How to increase your market share

Hello readers, today I am going to be writing about how you can increase your market share. Here they are:

Acquiring competitors
This is one medium you can use to increase your market share. You will gain the market share of any company you acquire. That is one of the ways Walmart used to become the market leader in its industry. That was also the way it expanded. It bought supermarkets in other countries, today it operates in 28 countries. Acquiring a competitor will also help reduce the competition that exists in your target market.

Having a good customer relationship
Customers will always talk about good products. The individuals they talk to may include their relatives, friends or colleagues at work. When they talk about your products, it helps you get more customers. When a company works on having a good relationship with customers it prevents them from going to competitors. Good customer service may include responding to their issues as fast as you can. It also means giving them products they want as long as it is Halal. All of this will help keep your market share as well as increase it.

Offering good prices
Attaching a good price to your products will keep your customers coming for more. It will also help you attract more customers. Market leaders offer value for money. They attach appropraite prices to their products. Customers will not feel cheated if your offer them good prices. Thus, it will help increase your market share.

Offering good quality
The quality of your product must be good. Once you start producing, the quality of your product must not drop. It must remain the same or even improve. You must be innovative with your products.  Develop better models of your products. Researches will also help you develop better products. All of this will help increase your market share.

Promoting your products
Making your products known to people that will buy them will help you gain more when it comes to market share. Word of mouth, television and radio adverts, sharing flyers and other mediums are ways your product can become known which will make people buy them which will in turn increase your market share.

Halal means anything that is acceptable Islamically. That is all for today. Thank you for reading this article. Keep checking my blog regularly. Cheers!

Some beliefs that are totally wrong

Hello readers, today I will telling you about some beliefs that are totally wrong. Here they are :

1.  Some individuals do not believe Islam (which means submission to the will of God) is the only right religion. You are wrong if you are one of those individuals, it is the only religion that can let you make Heaven and have a good life. 'And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it shall not be accepted from him, and in the life to come he shall be among the losers." Quran, Chapter 3:85

2. Some individuals believe that the reason why childbirth is painful and man have to work hard to make a living is because Adam and Hawa (Eve) disobeyed  Allah. You are totally wrong if you believe that, this is because Allah made us know in the Quran that no soul carries the burden of another. "And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. And if a heavily laden soul calls [another] to [carry some of] its load, nothing of it will be carried, even if he should be a close relative. You can only warn those who fear their Lord, (He is beyond the reach of their perception) and have established prayer. And whoever purifies himself only purifies himself for [the benefit of] his soul. And to Allah is the [final] destination." Quran, Chapter 35:18. "We have certainly created man into hardship." Quran, Chapter 90:4.

3. Some individuals believe that Jesus died on the cross for their sins, you are wrong if you believe that. He did not die on the cross, talk-less of dying for your sins."They declared, "We have put to death the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the Messenger of God.' They did not kill him nor did they crucify him, but it only seemed to them (as if it had been so). And those who differ in this matter are in doubt concerning it. They have no definite knowledge about it, but only follow mere conjecture. But they certainly did not kill him, God raised him towards Himself. God is Almighty and Wise." Quran, Chapter 4:157-158.

4. Some individuals believe that Jesus is the son of God, if you believe that, you are totally wrong. What you are doing is associating partners with Allah which is the greatest sin. It is the same as idol worshiping. "O people of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs." Quran, Chapter 4: 171

5. Some individuals believe that the hadith is intact, well the hadith is not intact, however, it contains some truth It is not one of  the Books of Allah, the only Book of Allah that remain intact and that will remain intact is the Quran. Some hadith prohibits what God has not prohibited, it is a idol worshipping to prohibit what He has not prohibited. For example, some will say music, dancing or drawings and sculptures of animal or humans are prohibited. They are totally wrong, nothing of such was mentioned in the Quran. Some narrates stories that contradicts what was written in the Quran, do not believe anything that contradicts what is in the Quran "And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allah a lie or denies His verses? Those will attain their portion of the decree until when Our messengers come to them to take them in death, they will say "Where are those you used to invoke besides Allah? They will say, "They have departed from us," and will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelivers." Quran, Chapter 7:37.

Recognising your assets, liabilities, income and expenses

Hello readers, so today I will be writing about assets, liabilities, income and expenses. The IFRS framework states that before any item can be identified, it must meet the definition of an asset, liabilities, income and expenses. You must also have enough proof that a change as occurred in your assets or liability. It must also be measured in monetary terms.

There are some situations whereby you can recognise an income even when you have not received it. For example it could take a project a long time to complete, income should be recognised when you execute a part of the project. The further you execute the project the more income you can recognise. I will advise you not to wait till the end of the project before you start asking for your money, read this article.

According to the IFRS " an asset is a resource controlled by an entity, as a result of a past event from which future economic benefit are expected to flow to the entity". As such,  an item is  recognised as an asset when it is likely that a future economic benefit will flow into your organisation as  a result of controlling the item. You do not need to own an item before you can call it your asset, you just have be in control of the item (nothing can happen without Allah's Permission). It must be able to be measured reliably in monetary terms.

According to IFRS "a liability is a present obligation of the entity arising from past event, the settlement of which is expected to result in an outflow from the entity of resources embodying economic benefit. As such, a liability should only be recognised when your company has an obligation to give out economic benefit due to a past event. It must also be able to be measured reliably in monetary terms.

Income is an inflow of economic benefit as a result of an increase in an asset or decrease in liability. It can only be recognised when the above occurs and it can be measured reliably in monetary terms. The inflow of economic benefit happens during the day to day activities of the organisation.

An expense on the other hand, is an outflow of economic benefit as a result of an increase in liability or a decrease in asset. Thus, an expense can be recognised when the above happens and it can be measured reliably in monetary terms. The outflow of economic benefit also happens during the day to day activities of an organisation.

Ways you can use to sustain your competitive advantage

Hello readers, today I will be telling you about ways you can use to sustain your competitive advantage. It is good to note that everything happens by Allah's (SWT) Will. However, you are always responsible for your actions cause you have freewill. In other words His Permission is needed for everything. If your competitive advantage is not given enough attention it can be overtaken by competitiors. You should always challenge your competitive advantage in order for it to be sustainable. Being innovative is one medium you can use. Competitors can erode your competitive advantage by imitating your products that is why you must have barriers in place to prevent them from imitating your products (this article will give you an idea on how to set barriers). This will help your company sustain its competitive advantage.

You have to pay attention to the technology in play. You should always improve the technology you use so as to be up to date with the trends in the market. That way your competitors will not see the technology you use as a loop-hole and take advantage of it. Walmart is a market leader and the largest company in the world by revenue, it uses a cutting edge technolgy to stay competitive. Technology can be outsourced from experts like Google. Look at how Samsung worked with Google and it became a market leader in the mobile phone industry.

Being up to date with the government's laws, rule and regulations is another way you can use to sustain your competitive advantage. Having issues with the government as a result of not obeying their rules can damage your reputation. It could also put you out of business. You should obey the rules that governs your industry. You should know that ignorance may not be seen as an excuse. Allah (SWT) wants you to obey the government except in situations where their laws conflicts with His Guidance. Having issues with the government can threaten your competitive advantage.

Having a good relationship with customers is another way to sustain your competitive advantage. By understanding your customers, thus getting to know them better, you can develop a business model that will help you meet their needs. It is the number of customers that buys your products that helps you achieve the market leadership position. Understanding customers will help you know what they want before they even say it, this will help you create better products that will meet the needs of customer before competitors think about it. Thus, helping you to sustain your competitive advantage.

The Istikharah Prayer

Hello readers , today I will be telling you about the Istikharah prayer. It is a prayer of guidance. When you want to make a major decision in your life, it is best you seek Allah's guidance. You should always pray to Allah to guide you through the right path in your daily activities. Istikharah prayer is recommended for a major decision such as getting married, starting a business and others.

How do you perform the Istikhara prayer?
Make two rakats (Nafila). During your first rakat, after reciting Surat Fatiha recite Surat Ikhlas, during your second rakat  after reciting Surat Fatiha recite Surat Kaafirun. After saying Asalam Alaykum Waramatullahi to the right and then the left recite this:

"Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi-ilmika wa astaqdiruka biqudra-tika, wa as'aluka min fadlikal Azeemi fainnaka taqdiru wa la aqdiru, wa ta'lamu wa la a'alamu, wa Anta Allamul-Ghuyubi, Allahum-ma in kunta ta'lamu anna  [then mention the thing to be decided] khairun li fee deeni wa ma'aashi wa aaqibati amri - [or say] - Aajilihi wa aajilihi. Faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li thumma baarik li feehi, wa in kunta ta'lamu anna haadhal amra sharun li fee deeni wa ma'aashi wa aaqibati amri - [or say] -Aajilihi wa aajilihi Fasriflu `anni wasrifni ' anhu waqdur liyal Khaira haithu kaana thumma ardini bihi."

It means " Oh Allah, I seek the counsel of Your Knowledge, and I seek the help of Your Omnipotence and I beseech Your Magnificient Grace. Surely You are Capable and I am not. You know and I know not. You are the Knower of the unseen. Oh Allah, surely You know so if this matter [then mention the thing to be decided] is good for me, in my religion and in my life and for my welfare in the life to come -[or say] - then ordain it for me and make it easy for me, then bless me in it. And if this matter is bad for me, in my religion and in my life and for my welfare in the life to come - [or say] - then distance it from me, and distance me from it, and ordain for me what is good wherever it is to be found and help me to be content with it.

"When you sleep, a guidance could be revealed to you in your dream. If you see anything white or green or both colours in your dream then you go ahead with your plan. However, if you see anything red or black in your dream then it means it is bad for you. If you get mixed answers in your dream like you see both something green and red then you have to repeat the Istikhara prayer till you get a definite answer. The Istikhara prayer should only be repeated for at most 7 times ( for a specific question). If you do not get any answer, then repeat it for at most 7 times (one Istikhara prayer for one day). If you still do not get any answer, some individuals say you should follow your heart."
